January is National Glaucoma
Awareness Month |
Today, more than 2.2 million Americans age 40 and older have open angle glaucoma - the most common form of glaucoma. Glaucoma is the leading cause of blindness in the world. According to research funded by Prevent Blindness America, glaucoma costs the US economy $2.86 billion every year in direct medical costs for outpatient, inpatient and prescription drug services.
Glaucoma has long been termed the "sneak thief of sight" because it slowly takes away vision, often without the patient even realizing it. It damages the optic nerve which sends information to the brain. When the optic nerve is damaged, peripheral vision begins to diminish. If left untreated, it may also damage central vision. As the disease progresses, the effectiveness of treatment diminishes as well. Once vision is lost, it can not be restored. Early diagnosis and treatment can save vision before it's lost.
Prevent Blindness America provides free resources to educate consumers on glaucoma, including treatment options and general information. Visit the Glaucoma Learning Center's website at www.preventblindness.org/glaucoma.
