AVRE manages switchboard operations at three campuses of the Veterans Administration Medical Center. Over 90 percent of switchboard operators are blind or visually impaired.

Operators at the switchboards are fully trained to make use of a variety of adaptive equipment and software programs ranging from very simple to sophisticated. Operators answer and process hundreds of incoming calls each day, making certain that the caller's connections are accurately completed. In addition, operators must also monitor the hospital alarm systems, calling in the appropriate response teams. AVRE managment from Binghamton monitors each operation and is on site as needed.
