| Core Vision Services |
 Every person who comes to A.V.R.E. for assistance is entitled to receive our Core Vision Services. Our highly qualified staff of Program Managers, Certified Vision Rehabilitation Therapists, Service Coordinators, and Orientation and Mobility Specialists work together to ensure that each person receives the counseling, skills training, employment counseling, or special adaptive devices needed to attain or maintain independence in all areas of life. |
| Vision Rehabilitation Therapy Services |
| Generally referred to as VRT, this skill training includes a range of independent living and working skills. They include training in a variety of communications, household, personal, technology and related areas. VRT is available for people in all age categories, appropriate to wishes and needs of the individual. |
| Low Vision Services |
 This service generally means obtaining a "low vision" examination by a qualified professional. A.V.R.E. now provides on-site low vision exams in its Norman Richterman Low Vision Center. Dr. Michael Lange, a licensed optometrist and certified low vision specialist who has a practice in Greene, NY, is available for appointments at the Center two days per month.
The outcome of the exam is often a recommendation for a special device for use in a specific environment. There is an infinite range of devices, but some examples include a specific magnifier, a special lens for reading street signs, a software package for enlarging print and a Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) for reading regular print or viewing pictures. | Orientation and Mobility |
Specially trained instructors teach Orientation and Mobility. The training may include how to move about in a specific environment such as a home, school or work place. It usually involves teaching proper techniques for safe and effective travel with a long (white) cane. It also includes training on how to be aware of clues from the environment and knowing your location. This service is provided to people in all age categories. |
| ACCESS-Tech Center |
Our ACCESS-Tech Center is an open resource room for A.V.R.E. consumers to come and try out the latest accessible computer technology, to practice adaptive computer skills, prepare a resumè, or to conduct a job search. ACCESS-Tech is stocked with seven computer stations that are equipped with the latest accessible computer software and hardware devices.
Additionally, this is a place where consumers who are interested in purchasing such devices as CCTVs, video magnifiers, scanning and reading devices, and satellite navigation systems (GPS) can come to learn about them and try them out. For more information visit ACCESS-Tech... |
| Counseling Services |
| This service is aimed at providing accurate and positive information to the person with the vision disability. Topics such as informational resources, peer groups, benefits, appropriate and available services and others can be discussed. A key purpose is to convey that "Success is not dependent upon vision." |
| Low Vision Adaptive Aids and Devices |
Program Services Staff can assist individuals in selecting and learning to use a wide range of simple or complex aids and devices that can be used in work, learning, or living environments.
