Employment and Career Services

Saundra at the Bronx switchboardA.V.R.E. offers a variety of employment options for individuals who have a vision disability. We understand the importance of desire, choice, qualifications, availability and options regarding employment and economic independence. Our options are designed to offer the widest range of training, employment and career development based on your skills and wishes.

Colleen Ciarletta, our Employment and Career Specialist, is continuing A.V.R.E.'s long-standing policy of working hard to place visually impaired people into employment opportunities, such as community businesses, summer work, internships, our on-site manufacturing plant or out switchboard operation through the Veterans Administration. With as much as 70% of the blind population not working, A.V.R.E.'s goal is to reduce the non-working rate of people with a vision disability so that it is at least equal to non-vision impaired individuals.

Placement Services -

A.V.R.E. placement services help individuals prepare for and search for employment. Assistance and guidance is available in such things as resumè writing, interviewing techniques and strategies, computer skills and assessments, job search networking, employer consultation and social and communication skills. While the individual is ultimately responsible, A.V.R.E. can help you get there!

A.V.R.E. Manufacturing and Business Division

A.V.R.E. operates a full-scale manufacturing business, producing high quality paper products such as manila file folders, copy paper and pressboard file folders. There is also a contract packaging department for assembly and light manufacturing projects. Over 90% of the manufacturing staff are visually impaired, but it is a fully integrated, competitive work environment offering unbeatable wages and benefits packages.

Switchboard Operations

A.V.R.E. currently holds contracts with the Veterans Administration for switchboard operations at three VA hospital campuses - two in the mid-Hudson region and one in the Bronx. Our employees are responsible for processing all incoming calls, monitoring hospital alarm systems and dispatching the appropriate response teams. The switchboard centers are equipped with some of the most advanced adaptive technology available. Again, more than 90% of the staff are visually impaired - at one hospital it is 100%!

Summer Employment/School to Work Transition

A.V.R.E. works with young people with a vision disability in obtaining summer work or jobs that are part of a school to work transition program. The key element is to obtain the broadest experience possible to prepare for an independent and successful working life.
